To all of Canada's Chefs & Foodies...                                                                            POSTED: December 30, 2008

Howdy,
Please forgive the mass nature of this email but sometimes technology is a wonderful thing, especially if it can help form a giant team of Chefs and do some good!

Can you spare a moment and help feed a hungry child this holiday season?

The Children's Emergency Foundation helps feed more than 90,000 kids a week in communities in every province across Canada. We're one of the countries leading hunger charities and now more than ever we need a hand. With the holidays fast approaching, with the onset of cold weather, government cut backs and the state of the economy the programs that we help fund are in dire need. Demand is increasing but donations are down. To help we've launched a new campaign, A Taste of Hope. Full details are here: http://thecef.akaraisin.com/Common/Event/Home.aspx?seid=541&mid=8

I've been thinking about how to help and I've come up with a crazy idea that just might work. What if every chef and professional cook in Canada heard about this and donated say $10 each? Together we would make a huge dent in a problem that concerns us all. Let's rally together as chefs and lend a hand. If you'd like to help you can do several things:

  • Take a moment, visit the site, add your name to Team Cuisine, whip out your Visa and please donate what you can. It only takes a moment and $5, $10 or $20 can really help. Click here to visit the personal page of Team Cuisine > The Chefs of Canada and make your donation: http://thecef.akaraisin.com/pledge/Participant/Home.aspx?seid=541&mid=9&pid=44907
  •  Forward this email to as many chefs, cooks and foodies as you possibly can. Maybe add a personal note of your own to introduce the idea...
  • Bookmark the site and check back to see how your team, Team Cuisine is doing!

Imagine what will happen if every chef and foodie in Canada makes a small donation, together we can make a powerful statement about the true nature of hospitality, together we can make a difference.

Thanks for taking a moment out of your busy day and considering this crazy idea!

Cheers, Michael

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE                                                                                                                         POSTED: December 30, 2008

Gold Medal Sweep for Team Alberta Chefs at World Culinary Olympics

EDMONTON, ALBERTA. Culinary Team Alberta chefs won gold in each of their three team competition categories, and then added two more gold medals in the individual competition at the IKA World Culinary Olympics held October 19 – 22, 2008 in Erfurt, Germany. In a field of 62 regional teams, the Alberta chefs’ gold-medal finish ranked second highest overall at this premier international competition.

“Judges are looking at innovation, presentation, composition, correct professional preparation and arrangement,” says Team Manager Vinod Varshney. “To get gold across the board, you have to hit the mark on every criterion on every dish. That’s not an easy thing to achieve, but the team did it.” Practice, teamwork and tremendous focus prepared the chefs, but the culinary Olympics challenge even experienced competitors like those on Team Alberta. “The standards are high, the pressure is intense and only peak performance will earn you gold and top ranking,” says Varshney.

Beyond drawing on the chefs’ creativity and individual strengths, team strategy included recruiting strong coaches. “All of the coaches know what it takes to win gold — because they’ve done it,” says Team Business Manager Simon Smotkowicz. “I think their coaching expertise, insight and support really pushed the team to the gold level.” Veteran competitors of one generation helping the rising stars of the next generation: a winning combination for Team Alberta at the World Culinary Olympics.
